You can also check via email or app, depending on the company. After you applied you should have received an application number or ID, which you can use to check the status of your application.

How can I check my credit card application status?

Applied for a credit card with a provider that's not in this list? You should be able to check the status of your application with one of the following options:

Why is my credit card application taking so long?

Most credit card companies offer a response within 60 seconds when you apply online. But if the credit card provider needs more information or doesn't offer "instant approval", it could take a few business days to find out if you're approved.

Here are some of the most common reasons for a delay:

  1. Not enough information. If you haven't given enough details on your application, or if the information is incorrect, the provider may need to contact you to get the right information.
  2. Credit issues. If you have black marks on your credit report, the provider may want to look at them in more detail before completing its assessment of your application. Get your free credit score here and ensure your financial history is in good standing before you apply.
  3. High demand. Sometimes a provider may get more applications than usual, which means it could take longer to get to yours – particularly if there is a competitive introductory credit card offer available.
  4. Incomplete applications. If you have missed a step in the application process this will hold up the application until you have provided all the information that the bank requires. Before you submit your application, it's important to review your application and ensure you've completed the relevant sections and provided all of the necessary information.

Can I speed up the application process?

Once you've applied for a credit card you can't really speed the process up.

If you apply for a card with your current bank the process is usually faster. The bank already has a good overview of your financial position.

Another way to speed up your application is to make sure your credit score is in good shape and apply for a card you are definitely eligible for. Check the card's minimum income requirement before applying.

Richard Whitten

"I got rejected when I applied for a credit card recently. I have an Excellent credit score and I met the card's minimum income requirement. The problem was that I spend too much. We spend most of my salary and save my wife's. I contacted the card company by phone but they didn't give me any real explanation. Then I applied again in my wife's name with me as the joint cardholder. We were approved in an hour."

Important information about this website

Advertiser Disclosure

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market. Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them. Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options. Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money.

Sorting and Ranking Products

When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.

Terms of Service and Privacy Policy

Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.

We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
